Lead-Acid Batteries and Pure Water
Flooded lead-acid batteries lose water through gassing as they charge, and topping them back up is routine maintenance on forklifts, floor scrubbers, mobility scooters, golf buggies and off-grid battery banks.
What you top up with matters. The minerals in tap water do not evaporate away with the next charge cycle; they accumulate in the electrolyte. Chlorides and iron in particular accelerate self discharge and sulphation, which quietly takes capacity off a battery that is otherwise healthy.
Battery manufacturers specify purified water for exactly this reason, and on a fleet of traction batteries the cost of getting it wrong is measured in replacement cells rather than pennies per litre.
Top up after charging rather than before, to the level the manufacturer marks and no further: filling a discharged cell to the top means electrolyte on the floor once it gasses.
