Pure water for aquariums

Tap water is treated to be safe to drink, which is a different specification from safe to keep fish in. It carries chlorine or chloramine, and depending on where you live it can carry nitrate, phosphate, copper and a general hardness that is nothing like the water most captive species evolved in.

Starting from zero TDS reverses the problem. Instead of trying to strip things out of tap water, you begin with water that has nothing in it and add back exactly the minerals your tank needs, using a remineralising salt for a planted tank or a reef salt for marine.

For soft water species such as many South American tetras and most wild-caught apistogramma, that control is the difference between fish that survive and fish that breed. For reef keepers it is the standard starting point, because phosphate and nitrate arriving in the top-up water is a slow algae problem you cannot chase down any other way.

It also saves running an RO unit at home, which for most hobbyists means a slow production rate, a waste line into the sink and resin to replace.
