What is pure water?

Here are the facts!

Pure water is water with the dissolved solids taken out of it. Not filtered in the sense of a jug filter taking out taste, but stripped down to the point where there is effectively nothing in the water except water.

TDS, and why it is the number that matters

TDS stands for total dissolved solids, measured in parts per million. It is everything dissolved in the water rather than floating in it: calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorides, nitrates, whatever the ground and the pipes contributed on the way to the tap.

UK tap water typically sits somewhere between 150 and 400ppm depending on where you are. That is fine to drink and terrible to clean with, because everything dissolved in it is left behind when the water evaporates. The white spots on a rinsed window are not dirt; they are the water's own mineral content.

At 0ppm there is nothing to leave behind, which is why pure water dries clear without being wiped.

How it is made

In stages, because no single process does all of it economically.

Sediment and carbon filtration come first. Sediment takes out particles; carbon takes out chlorine, which would otherwise damage the membrane in the next stage.

Reverse osmosis does the bulk of the work, forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane that passes water molecules and rejects most dissolved salts. It is not perfect, and it rejects a proportion of the water as waste.

De-ionisation finishes the job. Ion exchange resin swaps the remaining dissolved ions for hydrogen and hydroxide, which combine into more water. This is the stage that takes the output from nearly pure to zero, and it is also the stage that degrades with use, which is why output has to be monitored rather than assumed.

Who uses it

Window cleaners and solar panel cleaners, because it dries without marking. Detailers and valeters, for the final rinse. Fishkeepers, as a blank slate to build tank water from. Anyone running flooded lead-acid batteries.

Beyond the trades it turns up wherever a residue would be a problem: laboratory glassware, steam irons and steam generators, humidifiers, cooling systems, some vet and dental equipment, and brewing where the recipe calls for building water up from nothing.
